What exactly is MCG 14 anyway? Basically, MCG 14 is a designation given to a very specific, and frankly rather unfortunate-sounding, clump of densely-jammed dwarf spheroidules within the Large Magellanic Cloud (apparently nicknamed the “Todd Marsh Cactus," which I fully embrace. Seriously, who names these things?!). Let’s unpack that: Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC): This is basically a sort of slightly smaller, somewhat grumpy cousin to our own Milky Way, swirling around us in space like a perpetually irritated old ladies. 600,000 years ago it was the stuff of a really good, and probably very confusing, textbook. ’ Dwarf spheroidules : They are basically these tiny, dense clumps of what looks to be a lot of metallic material that have been formed over billions of years as a result of stellar explosions, where the results from the death throes of a star is then “baked in” and compacted into an almost solid state. 600,000 years ago there was this really bad day for the Todd Marsh Cactus. 3,000 new spheroidules were formed with enough density
